Residence Selection

Once you find out the date and time that residence selection on myUniMa beings, please, please, please be ready for it. My internet crashed on me only a few minutes prior, and I wasn’t able to get back onto the website until 5 minutes later. After which, all spots were booked out except for Ulmenweg.

Try your best to get into student housing, it’ll make life so much easier. Unless if you know fluent German, then feel free to go into the private housing market. It’ll be hit or miss, you can score a sweet place for cheaper than student housing, or get super unlucky and have to live in hotels/airbnbs the entire exchange term. It’s now halfway into October, and I know a few people that have only just found housing. I’ve also heard about other students getting scammed – being blamed for damage that wasn’t their fault, being lied to about facilities, etc.

There are a few dorms to consider.

  • B7 – closest to the University, mix of international and local students
  • G7 – in the middle of the Quadrate
  • Hafenstrasse – newer facilities, in a semi-dangerous area called Jungbusch (would not advise a female to walk home alone at night). There are a lot of drunk people around, as the clubs and bars are just around the corner.
  • Ulmenweg – international students galore, prison looking facilities but large rooms with high ceilings
  • Carl-Zuckermayer-Strasse – not too sure
  • Augartenstrasse – not too sure
  • Kolpinghaus – may be more difficult to do this one if you don’t know any German, but location for this is fantastic as well – right beside the major mall in the Quadrate.

If your budget allows it, I’d recommend paying the extra 100 euro or so per month to live in the “apartments”. In hindsight, I would’ve much preferred to live alone with all the facilities to myself. If you want to live the dorm life and have roommates, then stick with the dorm options. It depends on what you’re looking for out of your exchange experience.
